PRIVATE LESSONS

Instrument Lab:

An action-packed private music lesson with a philosophy that young children need exposure to a world of possibility in music. We are all too familiar with the old saying: "you either have it or you don't." To that I say: no more pigeon-holing musical aptitude! These curiosity-led classes will have your child inspired and feeling like music-making is their oyster. Using piano as our primary technical and theory instrument, students may branch out to singing, drum kit, amplified instruments, accordions and more to gain a layered understanding of rhythm, timbre, dynamics, harmony and improvisation. Students will leave each week hungry for more!

About the teacher: Mary Knapp is a classically-trained pianist and vocalist, composer and self-taught accordionist and guitarist. As a young person, Mary loved piano, but she believed she could never become a professional musician because she wasn't a great sight reader and didn't like practicing technical exercises. Fast forward to her early 20s - she began teaching herself accordion and it opened up a whole new world. Since then Mary has led multiple bands, performed on Broadway and toured in Central and South America. Mary believes that focus and dedication come when making music is accessible, fun and... outside the box!

Instrument Lab can be one-on-one or a custom small group lesson. In our group format, students are challenged and inspired to consider further ensemble and production elements from sound setup, to lighting, to narrative elements like props and costumes.
